District Profile
Introduction
In 2001, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) adopted a long-range comprehensive plan for the Anchorage Bowl called Anchorage 2020. The purpose of Anchorage 2020 is to guide development in the Anchorage Bowl through 2020. Anchorage 2020 identified Midtown as a major employment center and a redevelopment/mixed use area. These designations work together to create a focal point of office employment with supporting retail and commercial land as well as adjacent residential uses so people can live close to work. Anchorage 2020 recommended developing a Midtown District Plan to “address the unique combination of commercial and residential land uses evolving in the Midtown area”.

The purpose of the District Profile is to act as a baseline of information for the development of a Midtown District Plan.  In developing the profile, the project team collected existing data, plans, and other information and compiled it to create a snapshot of Midtown Anchorage today. The profile focuses on demographics, housing, employment, transportation, and land use information. It examines who lives in Midtown, how and where they live, what the local economic climate is, and how the land is being used. The profile also compares Midtown conditions to the Anchorage Bowl as a whole. The profile includes information on existing public facilities, environmental resources, and planned capital improvements for the district.
